CHALLENGE
Snap-On Business Solutions is a leading manufacturer of Specialty Service Tools (SST) for major OEM automotive manufacturers. These critical tools are supplied to automotive dealers to perform very specific repair tasks that aren’t possible with standard tools. The tools are stored in specially designed cabinets at the dealer location. All dealers receive the same tools. Each tool occupies a specified position in one of the 21 drawers. The drawers are equipped with liners that include a diagram and part number information for each tool, allowing the mechanic to easily locate and replace the required SST. New tools are frequently added to the SST cabinet, requiring updates to the liners.
Snap-On reached out to Sir Speedy Whittier to solve a problem with the production process they were experiencing with the vendor at that time – their antiquated production methods led to undesirable lead times (often 8 weeks), unacceptable waste (due to obsolescence of inventoried liners), and high unit cost of the kits.
SOLUTION
Sir Speedy Whittier was asked to review the SST Cabinet Program and develop a solution to eliminate the problems.
Using a Just In Time (JIT), digital workflow, we developed a process that allowed us to produce the liners using large format printing and CNC precision cutting. We used .020 PVC in place of the cardboard paper material previously employed, thus providing a tougher surface to stand up to the weight of the tools. The digital workflow allowed us to design and prototype sample sets, within hours, for perfect fit and finish. This strategy also allowed us to perfect pack out and fulfillment solutions.
RESULT
By re-imagining the entire SST cabinet liner and update program for Snap-On Business Solutions, we have cut time to market from 8 weeks to 10 days, eliminated all waste and inventory costs due to obsolescence, at a price point 50% less than the previous vendor. Additionally, the client can now make changes and additions right up to the time of production, thus assuring all of the information is up to date.
